Walmart acquired a majority stake in Massmart Holdings Ltd. in 2011. Massmart is an African retail group that owns brands such as Game, Makro, Builders, Cambridge Foods and more. We have leading market shares in the general merchandise, liquor, home improvement and wholesale food markets in the retail and wholesale stores we operate. The Group’s key foundations of high volume, low cost, responsible business and operational excellence enable our price leadership.

Builders


Builders is the Southern African leader in Home Improvement, DIY and Building Materials. The four Builders’ store formats – Warehouse, Express, Trade Depot and Superstore – cater to different markets with their own personalized feel and service offering, which are complimented by our online platform. Builders stores offer exceptional value to customers, a comprehensive range of competitively priced products, and helpful services.


Builders Warehouse


Is our warehouse retail format. Builders Warehouse offers an extensive range of competitively priced products with a large garden center display and Builders’ supply yard.


Builders Express


Caters to the homeowner and DIY enthusiast placed in convenient locations, a customer friendly store layout with pleasing displays, and personalized service and advice, making it a “one-stop” shopping experience.


Builders Trade Depot


Caters mostly to medium- to large-sized contractors and tradesmen engaged in building, maintenance and renovation projects. The chain mainly focuses on servicing the needs of construction entrepreneurs who require trade credit, telephonic ordering and building materials in bulk, delivered from low-cost outlets.


Builders Superstore


Focus on underserved markets around the country. The stores are situated in dense residential, township, rural and developing areas, and conveniently located near commuter nodes.

Game, Sub-Saharan Africa

Game


Game is a multi-category discount retailer of appliances, electronics, lifestyle merchandise, groceries, liquor and Value-Added Services, operating throughout South Africa and in 11 markets in the rest of sub-Saharan Africa.


Cambridge Food and Rhino Cash & Carry


Cambridge Food and Rhino Cash & Carry are food retailers with stores trading in all nine provinces of South Africa. At Cambridge and Rhino we offer our customer a wide range of quality national brands plus goods that we source and package under our own brand label across all major categories of fresh and perishable products, groceries, general merchandise, and appropriate services, mostly for cash.

Massmart Wholesale comprises Makro, Cash & Carry, Shield, The Fruitspot, Massfresh Meats and Wumdrop.


Makro


Makro sells Food, Liquor and General Merchandise categories, catering for retail, commercial and wholesale customers.


Cash & Carry


Cash & Carry sells Food, Liquor and General Merchandise categories and includes the brands CBW, Jumbo Cash & Carry, Sunshine, Trident, Eureka and Saverite. It caters for Commercial and Wholesale customers.


Shield


Shield (a voluntary buying association) services wholesale and independent trader customers.


Fruitspot


The Fruitspot is a Wholesaler and distributor of fresh and cut fruit and vegetables in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.


Massfresh


Massfresh Meats is a processor, distributor and wholesaler of fresh and processed meat products.


Wumdrop


Wumdrop provides crowd-sourced final mile delivery services to individuals and corporate businesses.

Massmart’s efforts to reduce its impact on the environment include water-use efficiency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, reducing waste generation and sustainable sourcing and product screening.


The corporate social investment programme focuses on reducing food insecurity and foundation phase education efforts in underserved communities. Additionally, a top priority for the business is advancing Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) as a key driver of economic and social inclusion and reducing inequalities.
