Associate Truck Driver Smiling

At Walmart, we’re committed to supporting those who serve, and we have been since the very beginning. Our founder, Sam Walton, served in the U.S. Army during the second World War. Honoring service members is in our DNA.

Our goal is to support veterans and military families during their service and beyond. That’s how we’ve built a culture where veterans feel they belong, with benefits for their well-being and an understanding that the skills gained in service can transfer to any job out there.

533,525

More than 533,525 veterans and military spouses hired since 2013.

63,400

More than 63,400 veterans and military spouses promoted since 2013.

$1.2b

$44m

$44 million given by the Walmart Foundation to veteran and military causes.

We’ve identified four pillars to help us better serve those who’ve served:

Employment

Helping our service members find fulfilling work is important. It’s why we launched the Find a Future platform, which guides veterans through an audit of their skills, experience and education to help them understand where they are and where they want to go. From there, the platform can help them build the roadmap, connecting them to partners and resources to make their dreams a reality. Those that are ready now can explore available opportunities.

Find a Future is about you.

When veterans join Walmart, we give them the chance to give back – helping other associates reach their own career aspirations through the Walmart SERVES Associate Resource Group (ARG).

Aaron Parrott is the Store Manager of Store 150 in Woodward, Oklahoma. A proud Marine Corp veteran, he credits his military service with helping him develop the skills to lead teams, manage operations and deliver results.

Education

The first step to any next step is always learning. We’ve launched a career fellowship program, expanding our investment and involvement in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes programs to offer hiring summits and fellowship opportunities to veterans and their families.

And once associates are hired, they have access to Live Better U, so they can expand their horizons even further.

Entrepreneurship

The veteran entrepreneurs we do business with make Walmart a stronger company. Veteran suppliers are an important part of our mission to deliver the products and services our customers want and need. Walmart is a founding member of the Coalition for Veteran Owned Business, which supports veterans and their larger communities by connecting them to opportunities to grow their own businesses.

Take, for example, Bon AppéSweet. Veteran-owned and Walmart-supported, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well.

Well-being

Well-being at Walmart means offering benefits to support all aspects of life – emotionally, physically and financially. Associates and their families have access to a variety of mental health resources to help them manage stressors, build resilience and get the care they need fast. Our medical coverage starts at just $33 and includes virtual health care programs, and associates and their families can get discounts on fitness plans. Qualifying associates can take advantage of our 401(k) match and our associate stock purchase plan match. It’s all part of our commitment to helping our associates live better.

Walmart also has key relationships with organizations focused on supporting those who have served in the military. Merging Vets and Players (MVP) provides veterans with a new team to assist with transition, promote personal development and show them they are never alone. Sheep Dog Impact Assistance offers veterans opportunities for physical activities to foster camaraderie, peer-to-peer training to transform struggle into strength and volunteer opportunities for continued service.

Foundation

To strengthen our support of veterans as they reintegrate into their local communities, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have invested more than $44 million since 2011, in job training, education and innovative public/private community-based initiatives.

Walmart also offers a wide range of programs that are available to veteran organizations, such as our local community grants program, as well as programs designed to engage both associates and customers.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have supported numerous veterans and military organizations including Manufacturing Institute, Education Design Lab, Hire Heroes USA, Wreaths Across America, Institute for Veterans and Military Families and the Doughboy Foundation.
