What is Walmart doing about hunger?

Serving communities lies at the heart of Walmart’s mission to save people money and help them live better by providing convenient, omni-channel access to affordable food and other essential products and services day to day. We aim to create value for communities in many ways, including the following:

  • Providing convenient access to affordable, quality food and other essential products through our omni-channel business model and everyday low prices
  • Providing meaningful employment and helping develop the local workforce through quality jobs, training, education and career paths
  • Investing in the local supplier base in markets where we operate to meet customer needs while helping to support supplier jobs and inclusive economic growth
  • Contributing to community resilience through disaster response and enhancing food security
  • Supporting local organizations and causes that matter to customers, associates and neighbors in our communities
  • Contributing to the tax base through corporate income-based tax and the impact our business has in varying ways by community on other types of tax revenue (e.g., sales and property tax)

Walmart believes no family should have to choose between food that’s healthy and food that’s affordable. In FY2022 alone, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provided funding to reach 1.1 million people with nutrition education. Since 2006, Walmart and Sam’s Club have donated more than 7 billion pounds of food from stores, clubs and distribution centers to Feeding America food banks.

Our vision for a sustainable food system is one that will require combining efforts to improve access and availability to healthier food with approaches to increase people’s confidence to select, prepare and serve healthier foods. That’s why we also support programs that provide nutrition education and cooking skill development to help families develop confidence in choosing healthier foods.

As the world’s largest retailer, we are relentless in our commitment to making healthier food more accessible to our customers. Ninety percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store, and globally we serve approximately 230 million customers a week, which gives us a unique opportunity to make every day a little easier for busy families.
