Our Aspiration
Walmart aspires to operate our business in a regenerative way—helping to more sustainably manage, restore, and conserve the landscapes and seascapes that underpin our supply chains, support product availability, and strengthen the resilience of the communities we serve.
Relevance to Our Business and Society
Healthy forests, grasslands, and ocean systems are essential to the products Walmart sells and the communities we serve. These ecosystems provide critical services—including clean water, climate regulation, and storm protection—that support supply chains, operations, and long-term business resilience.
Governance and Transparency
Ensuring appropriate management and oversight over nature-related risks.
- Walmart's corporate sustainability team leads the company's nature strategy in collaboration with sourcing, merchandising, and operations. Executive leadership receives periodic updates on strategy and performance, while the ESG Disclosure Committee oversees public disclosures related to nature.
- The Board's Nominating and Governance Committee oversees sustainability strategies and initiatives, and the Audit Committee oversees identification and monitoring of nature-related risks through Walmart's annual Enterprise Risk Management process.
Assessing Nature-Related Business Risks
Identifying nature-related impacts, dependencies, and opportunities.
- Walmart conducts periodic assessments to identify nature-related impacts, dependencies, risks, and opportunities across its business.
- In 2024, Walmart updated its assessment to align with the TNFD framework, evaluating physical and transition risks across retail operations, manufacturing, and sourcing over multiple planning horizons.
- Nature-related risks continue to be monitored through Walmart's ERM process and incorporated into annual and long-term planning.
Fostering More Sustainable Production of Commodities
Advancing more sustainable production of priority commodities across key ecosystems—forests, grasslands and freshwater, and oceans.
- In 2020, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation set a goal to help more sustainably manage, protect, and/or restore at least 50 million acres of land and 1 million square miles of ocean by 2030 — reflecting the scale of ecosystems that support our product supply chains. In FY2026, suppliers and grantees reported engagement across 76.2 million acres of land and 3.68 million square miles of ocean.
- Engagement included work within and outside Walmart’s product supply chains, including 69.8 million acres of land and 3.61 million square miles of ocean supporting more sustainable commodity production, and 6.41 million acres of land and 74,000 square miles of ocean supporting conservation and restoration.
- Walmart advances more sustainable commodity production through sourcing expectations, supplier engagement and continuous improvement, investments in traceability and measurement, and place-based initiatives in key sourcing regions. Since FY2021, the Walmart Foundation has invested more than $120 million in place-based projects, enabling research and capacity building, and conservation projects — including $30.5 million in FY2026.
- We establish product sourcing expectations for priority commodities, including the adoption of relevant production practices, recognized certifications or other verification approaches, and supplier reporting through established platforms.
- We engage suppliers to support continuous improvement by inviting them to adopt and scale more sustainable practices across their value chains through Project Gigaton Nature and other engagement. Actions progress along a “basic–better–best” continuum, supported by reporting tools, training, best-practice sharing, industry collaboration, and strategic supplier initiatives.
- We support the infrastructure needed to address systemic nature-related challenges, including traceability and data systems, standards and certification frameworks, measurement and verification, research, innovation, and capacity building. Since FY2021, the Walmart Foundation has invested more than $45.3 million across these areas, including $7.74 million in FY2026.
- We advance place-based initiatives, geographically defined, multi-stakeholder initiatives, that integrate improved production practices, traceability, producer engagement, conservation and restoration, and positive social and economic outcomes. Walmart supports these initiatives through sourcing and supplier engagement, while the Walmart Foundation provided more than $17.2 million in FY2026 to support work in critical landscapes and seascapes.
- Walmart also advances freshwater stewardship through water-saving technologies, stormwater management, and maintenance of 356 wetlands across 342 Walmart U.S. properties.
Supporting Conservation and Restoration
Protecting and restoring critical ecosystems through our operations, partnerships, and philanthropic investments.
- Walmart and the Walmart Foundation support conservation through philanthropy, supplier engagement, and long-standing partnerships.
- In FY2026, the Walmart Foundation awarded $5.5 million in conservation grants supporting priority ecosystems.
- Acres for America has protected more than 2 million acres of critical wildlife habitat through more than 126 projects.
- In November 2024, Walmart and NFWF announced a 10-year, $34.5 million renewal of Acres for America.
