Smartphones have become an increasingly popular part of our customers' everyday lives.  We know that holds true for the rest of America as well. According to Nielsen, research shows that for the first time, a majority of U.S. mobile subscribers of all age groups own smartphones.

We’ve seen more and more customers choosing where they purchase new smartphones based on where they'll get the best value for their trade-ins. Now, when they come to Walmart they’ll not only get low prices on the newest phones and exclusive offerings, but they’ll also receive a much quicker process for getting their new phone activated. That’s because Walmart acquired a best-in-class technology solution for selling and activating wireless devices that require data plans. The technology was developed by industry-leading wireless services provider Simplexity. After the company filed for bankruptcy, Walmart acquired Simplexity’s Wireless Activation Retail Platform (WARP) solution on May 2.

Innovation is in our DNA.  A key part of our ability to innovate is leveraging technology, like Simplexity’s software, to create enhanced and differentiated experiences for our customers every day.  Once our technology team integrates the new platform in U.S. Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs and online later this year, customers and associates will see a tremendous difference.

  • The new platform and its easier-to-use interface will complement sales by enabling us to more efficiently support our customers when they purchase cell phones or other wireless electronic devices. We expect customers will experience a significant decrease in wait time in Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs when activating their wireless device.
  • The enhancements should seamlessly resolve any exception issues that are typically encountered during the activation process. For example, a database monitoring all orders will help us ensure Walmart sells phones to customers that intend to fulfill their contracts to carriers.
  • Walmart.com will also eventually benefit from the technology, which will provide a seamless online option that will walk customers through the activation process.

Buying a cell phone shouldn’t be stressful or confusing. We are simplifying the process for our customers by providing them with choice, value and I am excited that very soon, we’ll also have a streamlined system for getting new phones up and running.
