The holidays are known as the season for giving. But for Detroit resident Cher Doner, helping her neighbors is something that happens all year long.
Living in the Brightmoor community that has been hit hard by crime, hunger and poverty, Cher saw that when kids in the area weren’t in school, they didn’t have enough to eat. She began inviting the children she saw on the street into her home for meals. Shortly after, she made her efforts official by joining Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry program, which enabled her to host a summer meals program in her yard.
Walmart partnered with the TODAY Show to bring a huge surprise to Cher and Brightmoor by bringing in groceries, toys, winter coats, a holiday meal and $10,000 in gift cards to ensure their pantry stays stocked well past Christmas. The story, which is part of the sixth annual “Getting to the Heart of Christmas” series, aired on the TODAY Show this morning.
