Back in 1987, the man affectionately known to our team as “Mr. Sam,” Sam Walton, committed to raising money for children’s hospitals with the promise that “the associates will amaze you.” After 27 years, that statement couldn’t be any more true.
Having worked with Walmart and Sam’s Club since 2008 as an account director for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, I’ve been inspired by the associates time and time again. In addition to supporting the annual “Miracle Balloon” campaign in which customers and members are invited to make a donation at the cash register, many associates take fundraising to the next level. They’ve volunteered their own time sewing newborn hats, hosting carnivals for patients at member hospitals and have made countless personal contributions. They know every dollar makes a difference.
And those dollar donations have added up to millions. Last year alone, Walmart and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. and Canada raised more than $63 million for 170 Children's Miracle Network Hospitals across North America. Since the partnership began in 1987, generous associates, customers and members have contributed more than $700 million, allowing for amazing advances in child health care.
I’ve seen firsthand the impact local donations have on kids fighting cancer, children who’ve been tragically injured and preemies born too soon. Walmart and Sam’s Club donations have funded everything from charitable care and neonatal helicopters to newborn intensive care units and pediatric research, and have even stocked labor and delivery food pantries so parents don’t have to leave the side of their struggling newborn.
Sam Walton really identified with CMN Hospitals’ strong community focus. Every dollar raised by a Walmart or Sam’s Club stays in the area it was raised to help kids treated at the local member hospital. Associates may be raising funds for their own children, and customers or members are likely donating to benefit their neighbor’s families.
Beginning May 1 through June 11, Walmart customers and Sam’s Club members can help “Every child live better” by making a donation of $1 or more to the Children's Miracle Network Hospital serving their community. I can’t wait to be amazed again by this year’s campaign.
