Walmart Honored at Annual Veterans Recognition Luncheon

Veterans Museum Names Walmart San Diego Corporation of the Year for its Support of Veterans

SAN DIEGO, CA. (Nov. 10, 2014) – On Friday, November 7, 2014, Walmart was recognized for its work on behalf of veterans at the San Diego County Veteran of the Year Recognition Luncheon held at the Scottish Rite Center in San Diego. The event, hosted by the San Diego Veterans Museum and Memorial Center, is held each year to recognize the community’s local veterans and the organizations that support them. This year, Walmart had the distinguished honor of receiving the San Diego Corporation of the Year Award for its ongoing support of the nation’s active duty forces, its veteran employment policies and its assistance to local veteran programs.

“Walmart is honored to receive today’s award and humbled to be able to give back to our nation’s heroes,” said San Diego County Walmart Market Manager Craig Abbott, who accepted the award on behalf of Walmart.  “Hiring a veteran is one of the best decisions a company can make. They are leaders with discipline, training and a passion for service. Walmart is proud to do our part to support the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for the safety and well-being of our nation.”

As one of the largest private employers of veterans, Walmart is determined to support our service men and women as they return home. On Memorial Day 2013, Walmart launched the Veterans Welcome Home Commitment to offer priority hiring to any honorably discharged veteran within her or his first 12 months off active duty. Since that time, more than 67,861 veterans have been hired and offered a greater opportunity for success, including more than 2,800 veterans in California. Over the next five years, Walmart projects this commitment to result in the hiring of more than 100,000 veterans nationally.

Locally, Walmart is dedicated to partnering with organizations in San Diego County serving veterans and their families, including Veterans Village, Operation Homefront, the Vet Fund Foundation and Veterans Association of North County. Throughout the County, Walmart has also supported veteran jobs fairs, such as co-hosting the “East County Employs Our Vets” Job Fair. Walmart works hard to support veterans throughout the community, and continues to seek out new opportunities and partnerships that will benefit members of the military and their loved ones.
