SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 22, 2014 – San Antonio’s third Walmart Neighborhood Market is opening Wednesday, Oct. 29, following a community-filled event and brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store is conveniently located at 4226 De Zavala Road and is open 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. The store will provide north central San Antonio residents with low prices on an assortment of produce, packaged consumer goods and specialty food items. This location will also offer customers a full-service pharmacy. In addition, customers have the convenience of participating in Walmart's free Site to Store program, enabling customers to choose from nearly a million additional online items that can be ordered on Walmart.com and picked up at the San Antonio store for free, often as quickly as the same day.
The new De Zavala Neighborhood Market is part of Walmart’s plan to open an additional 270 to 300 small-format locations this year. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are more than 400 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide and about 60 just in Texas. Walmart Neighborhood Markets average about 40,000 square feet, about one fifth the size of a Walmart Supercenter, and provide customers with convenient access for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services, at the same every day low prices.
“We are excited to open this new Walmart Neighborhood Market to better serve the residents of north central San Antonio,” said store manager Linda Castro-Mojica. “We look forward to meeting our customers and helping them save money and live better with our wide assortment of fresh produce, prepared meals, organics, household items and pharmacy. For those who have not seen a Neighborhood Market before, I invite you to come visit us and experience the smaller format and added convenience it provides for busy families and professionals in the area.”
Affordable Groceries to Meet Your Needs
The new store offers fresh produce and a full line of groceries from all the leading brand names, including organic and natural selections. There is also a wide variety of meat and bakery selections perfect for all Holiday meals.
Smaller Store, More Convenience
This new Neighborhood Market is 40,000 square feet, approximately one fifth the size of a Walmart Supercenter. In addition to groceries, the store features health and beauty aids, pet products and cleaning supplies. In addition, customers can shop a broader assortment of items online at Walmart.com and then pay for these purchases with cash in all of Walmart U.S. stores and Walmart Neighborhood Markets, including the new De Zavala store. Customers can also visit the Walmart App and take advantage of the Savings Catcher program, providing receipt comparison and giving customers added confidence and convenience when they shop. If a local competitor has a lower advertised price, customers receive an eGift Card for the difference.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions. San Antonio residents can easily transfer prescriptions and order refills on the go with the Walmart mobile app for iPhone and Android.
New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. Castro-Mojica began her Walmart career in 1982 as an hourly department manager.
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $8,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Organizations receiving grants include Blue Santa on behalf of the San Antonio Police Department, St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Tom Clark High School, Lock Hill Selma Elementary and the San Antonio Fire Department.
In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Texas donated approximately 59 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2014, or the equivalent of 49.2 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $110.8 million in fiscal year 2014 in Texas alone.
