INDIO, Calif., Oct. 2, 2014 – A new Walmart is opening Wednesday, October 8, following a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store is conveniently located at 82491 Avenue 42 and is open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. The store will provide Indio residents with low prices on a broad assortment of merchandise and offer Walmart's free Site to Store program, enabling customers to choose from nearly a million additional online items that can be ordered on Walmart.com and picked up at the Indio store for free, often as quickly as the same day.
The new store employs approximately 300 full- and part-time associates. Store manager David Murphy began his Walmart career in 1992 as an overnight stocker/unloader. “We are really looking forward to bringing Indio the Every Day Low Prices made famous by Walmart,” said Murphy, “This is a city that is on the rise, and we’re so proud as Walmart to be a part of Indio’s growth and development.”
“Companies like Walmart that are willing to invest in the future of our City are a vital part of our economy,” said Indio Mayor Michael Wilson. “With the opening of this new store, hundreds of newly created jobs and expanded shopping options are being made available to our residents. We are proud to finally welcome Walmart to the City of Indio.”
Affordable Groceries to Meet All Your Needs
The new store offers fresh produce and a full line of groceries from all the leading brand names and local favorites for school lunches.
“We expect this new Walmart store to be a huge benefit for Indio,” said Joshua Bonner, President and CEO of the Indio Chamber of Commerce. “The economic benefits of a new store are well-documented, while the company is renowned for giving back to the communities in which it operates. This is a win-win for Indio.”
In addition to groceries, the store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including electronics and the new iPhone 6. In addition, customers can shop a broader assortment of items online at Walmart.com and then pay for these purchases with cash in all of Walmart U.S. stores and Walmart Neighborhood Markets, including the new Indio store.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions. Indio residents can easily transfer prescriptions and order refills on the go with the Walmart mobile app for iPhone and Android.
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $7,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine, Kiwanis Club of Indio, Shadow Hills High School, Indio High School, Coachella Valley History Museum and Christ is Salvation Church.
Renewing American Manufacturing
Walmart is committed to investing $250 billion in products that support American manufacturing over the next 10 years. In California, Walmart buys products from King’s Hawaiian, a Torrance-based manufacturer that makes original Hawaiian sweet bread.
