  • San Antonio-area Walmart stores create approximately 400 new jobs

SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 13, 2014 – Two new Walmart stores are opening Wednesday, August 13, following brief ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 7:30 a.m.

“Walmart has always been a great community partner,” Commissioner Kevin Wolff said. “The new stores bring nearly 400 jobs with good pay into Bexar County and offer shoppers expanded choices for their home goods and groceries.”

The new Blanco / Wurzbach Supercenter is conveniently located at 12639 Blanco Road and has been tailored to fit the needs of the community it will serve.

“The new Wurzbach Supercenter provides great value and prices for the surrounding communities,” Councilman Joe Krier said. “We’re proud to welcome Walmart to the neighborhood.”

The Wurzbach supercenter will employ approximately 300 full- and part-time associates. Wurzbach store manager Scott Redman first began his management career with Walmart in 1993.

“Walmart is excited to offer San Antonio residents a new convenient shopping location,” said Redman. “We are here to provide affordable items for whatever the occasion.”

Both locations are open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. They will provide San Antonio residents with low prices on a broad assortment of merchandise and offer Walmart's free Site to Store program, enabling customers to choose from nearly a million additional online items that can be ordered on Walmart.com and picked up at either store for free, often as quickly as the same day.

The Military Drive Neighborhood Market, located at 9526 Military Drive W., is part of Walmart’s plan to open an additional 270 to 300 small-format locations this year. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 300 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.

The new Neighborhood Market, the second of its kind in San Antonio, will employ approximately 90 full- and part-time associates. Military Drive store manager Mable Goldsmith began her Walmart career in 2002 as a developmental shift manager. She became a store manager in 2004.

“This Walmart format will provide an easy way for San Antonio residents to get their everyday items,” said Goldsmith.

Affordable Groceries to Meet All Your Needs
The new stores offer fresh produce and a full line of groceries from all the leading brand names, including organic and natural selections. They also offer a wide variety of meat and bakery selections, including fresh baked breads and tortillas.

In addition to groceries, the Supercenter features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including electronics and back-to-school supplies.  In addition, customers can shop a broader assortment of items online at Walmart.com and then pay for these purchases with cash in all of Walmart U.S. stores and Walmart Neighborhood Markets, including the new San Antonio stores.

The new Neighborhood Market is approximately one-quarter the size of a Walmart Supercenter. In addition to groceries, the store features health and beauty aids, pet products and cleaning supplies.

The pharmacies at both locations offer a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions. San Antonio residents can easily transfer prescriptions and order refills on the go with the Walmart mobile app for iPhone and Android.

Community Giving
The grand-opening celebrations include presentations of grants from Walmart to local community groups.  Recipients of grants include Warren High School, Christian Evers Elementary, Jack C. Jordan Middle School and the Special Olympics.

In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Texas donated approximately 59 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2014, or the equivalent of 49.2 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $110.8 million in fiscal year 2014 in Texas alone. A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the San Antonio community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, August 16. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Redman and Goldsmith and enjoy fun family activities and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration at either store from noon to 3 p.m.
