Corona, CA (August 1, 2014) – Walmart today announced it will bring a new Neighborhood Market to the City of Corona. The store, set to open next year on the south side of West Sixth Street, will help revitalize a shopping center. The Neighborhood Market is currently under construction and will be just over 34,000 square feet.
“We are excited to see development moving forward on this part of Sixth Street,” said Corona Mayor Karen Spiegel. “The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will provide area families with ready access to basic necessities and fresh food at affordable prices.”
Walmart Neighborhood Markets feature a wide variety of products, including fresh produce, meats and dairy products, frozen foods, dry goods and staples, deli foods, bakery items, canned and packaged goods, condiments and spices, pet supplies, household supplies and a full-service pharmacy. First opened in 1998, Walmart operates more than 370 Neighborhood Markets across the country, including nearly 50 in California.
“Walmart is pleased to bring a new neighborhood market to our customers in Corona,” said Walmart market manager Mike Acheson. “We look forward to working with the City and local residents to transform this shopping center into a vibrant community feature that will provide residents with convenient shopping and affordable, healthy food options.”
Through its operations, Walmart also supports local businesses in the Inland Empire. In FYE 2013, Walmart spent more than $1.1 billion dollars with local suppliers in the region, helping support more than 13,500 jobs. Walmart works with local produce suppliers like Index Fresh, based out of Temecula, and Corona College Heights of Riverside, to supply stores throughout California, including the new Corona Neighborhood Market, and the country with quality avocados and citrus.
The new store will provide about 65 jobs in the community, and a hiring center for the store will open later this year. Walmart jobs provide competitive wages and benefits to eligible full- and part-time associates; as of May 2014, the average wage for regular, full-time hourly associates in California is $13.13. Walmart provides a variety of affordable health and well-being benefits, including health care coverage with no lifetime maximum. Walmart also offers eligible associates matching 401(k) contributions of up to 6 percent of pay, discounts on general merchandise, an Associate Stock Purchase Program and company-paid life insurance. Additionally, eligible associates receive a quarterly incentive based on store performance.
The new Walmart Neighborhood Market in Corona will include energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy, water consumption and minimize waste. Exterior building signage and refrigerated cases will use light emitting diodes (LEDs) that are more than 50 percent more efficient than traditional fluorescent lighting. Highly efficient and low-flow toilets and faucets will reduce the water used, and the industry’s most efficient heating, ventilating and air conditioning units will be utilized to save energy. The store will also operate a recycling program and promote sustainable product purchases.
This will be the fourth store to open in Corona, which has two Supercenters and a Sam’s Club location, providing more than 800 jobs in the community.
