Edinburg, Texas, May 14, 2014 – A new Walmart will open Wednesday, May 21, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store at 2812 S. Expressway 281 is conveniently located at Expressway 281 and East Canton Road, and is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. It will provide Edinburg residents with shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store also offers pharmacy services, including a drive-thru.
“Having an additional Walmart in Edinburg is more than just giving our residents another place to shop—it’s a means for 300 additional people to make a living and provide for their families,” said Mayor Richard Garcia. “The new jobs that Walmart has created are greatly appreciated. Walmart has and continues to be a great partner to our community.”
The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of $6,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include American Red Cross, Barrientes Middle School, Boys & Girls Club, Edinburg Fire Department, Food Bank of Rio Grande Valley, Rainbow Room, Edinburg Police Department and Crime Stoppers.
In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Texas donated approximately 43.7 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 36.4 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $86.2 million in fiscal year 2013 in Texas alone.
