More Jobs and Grocery Options Coming to Surfside Beach

Walmart Neighborhood Market brings smaller format, local fresh food favorites and employment opportunities to the community

  • New Walmart Neighborhood Market located at 125 Maryport Drive
  • Up to 95 jobs created
  • Store open 24 hours a day, seven days a week

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C., May 7, 2014 – Walmart will open the first Walmart Neighborhood Market in Surfside Beach Wednesday, May 14, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store, approximately one-fifth the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is located at 125 Maryport Drive and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services. The store also features a beach shop.

“We’re happy to have a great company like Walmart relocate back to Business 17, and I say that because there was a Walmart right in that area 15 years ago or so," said Surfside Mayor Douglas Samples. "We’re glad they're back and providing job opportunities and great products."

"I'm excited about the fact that the store is opening and providing the new jobs," said Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes. "The store’s location is very convenient to the camp grounds and housing development in the area. It's just a good fit here."

Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full-grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features fresh produce, prepared food options, self-serve deli, a bakery and beer and wines. It also offers health and beauty aids, pet supplies and convenience services such as MoneyCenter and Walmart’s Site to Store, a delivery and pick-up option for www.walmart.com shopping.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services, including a drive-thru. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

Community Giving
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $4,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include the Town of Surfside Beach, City of Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach Police Department, Horry County Police Department and St. James High School.

In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in South Carolina donated approximately 10.7 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 8.9 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $20.9 million in fiscal year 2013 in South Carolina alone. New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 300 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.

Store manager Shawna Luc began her Walmart career in 2000 as an hourly associate in a Walmart Tire & Lube Center in Boaz, Alabama.

“We look forward to meeting our new neighbors and invite them to join us for the grand opening celebration and the Big Family Welcome this Saturday,” said Luc.

A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Surfside Beach community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, May 24. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Luc and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m
