SURF CITY, N.C., May 7, 2014 – Walmart will open a new Walmart Neighborhood Market Wednesday, May 14, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store, approximately one-quarter the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is located at 420 Fun Center Drive and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.

“The Town of Surf City is excited about the opening of Walmart as its newest business,” said Mayor A.D. “Zander” Guy. “This store will bring jobs to the community, add to the commercial tax base, increase shopping options our residents and visitors have, and perhaps most importantly, it signals to other companies and investors that Surf City is a growing, thriving center of commerce in our local region.”

Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full-grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh baked breads, self-serve deli and a bakery. The surf City store is also tailored to the community, offering local favorites.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

Live Better Local Event
The new Walmart will host a day of giving Saturday, June 14, to celebrate and give back to the community, including grants to local non-profits. Nonprofit organizations can apply at http://foundation.walmart.com/apply-for-grants/local-giving.

In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in North Carolina donated approximately 16 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2014, or the equivalent of 13.3 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $39.8 million in fiscal year 2013 in North Carolina alone. New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 300 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.

Store manager Tim Bass began his Walmart career in 2002 as an hourly associate in the produce department.

“We are excited to bring jobs and a new shopping option to Surf City,” said Bass. “We invite everyone to stop by and see the new store, enjoy our grand-opening festivities and take advantage of vendor promotions and giveaways.”

A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Surf City community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, May17. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Bass and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
