FRESNO, Calif., May 13, 2014 – An expanded Walmart – making it the first Supercenter in the City of Fresno – will unveil the changes Wednesday, May 14 after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The expanded store at 5125 E. Kings Canyon Road is conveniently located and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will provide Fresno residents with shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store also offers pharmacy services.
The expansion to a Supercenter will allow for a larger selection of merchandise so customers can shop closer at home and keep more tax dollars in the city. New departments include fresh produce, bakery, deli and grocery. Among the local companies whose products will now be available as a result of the expansion are La Tapatia, Mi Rancho and Producers Dairy Foods, Inc.
“I am excited to welcome an expanded Walmart to the City of Fresno, offering a full-service grocery department with locally sourced fresh fruit and vegetables,” said Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin. “This store expansion and remodel gives Fresnans another option for healthy and affordable food while also creating new job opportunities for our residents.”
The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of $7,500 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California, East Fresno Boys & Girls Club, Easter Seals Central California, Fresno Center for New Americans, Fresno Police Activity League, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Sunnyside High School Marching Band and Southeast Fresno Community Development Association.
In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in California donated approximately 10.2 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 8.5 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $26.3 million in fiscal year 2013 in California alone. Store, More Jobs
The store employs approximately 300 full- and part-time associates, including approximately 80 positions created by the expansion. Store Manager Mike Liebsch began his Walmart career in 1999 as an hourly associate at the Walmart in Simi Valley.
“I love having the opportunity to expand the store to bring fresh foods, value and convenience to Fresno,” said Liebsch. “We invite everyone to stop by our grand opening and take advantage of vendor giveaways and promotions.”
Walmart is happy to be part of the Fresno community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, May 17. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Liebsch and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
