Walmart Neighborhood Market brings smaller format, local fresh food favorites and employment opportunities to the community

JOPLIN, Mo., April 28, 2014 – Walmart will open the first Walmart Neighborhood Market in Joplin Thursday, May 1 after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store, approximately one-third the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is located at 1600 E. 7th St. at the intersection of 7th and Saint Louis Streets and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.
“Joplin is excited to have a Walmart Neighborhood Market opening in our community,” said Mayor Melodee Colbert-Kean. “This recognizable addition to our city will provide jobs, revitalize a heavily trafficked thoroughfare and offer a large selection of fresh produce for healthy eating. Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full-grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh baked breads, a bakery and a deli, including a smoker oven that will provide prepared meal options such as pork loins, ribs and chickens.
pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members
can answer product and prescription questions, and customers can ask about
health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of grants from Walmart to Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Missouri, Special Olympics, Joplin Police Department and Joplin Fire Department. The grand-opening celebration will also include a grant presentation of $50,000 to Missouri Southern State University through the Walmart State Giving Program.
In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Missouri donated approximately 16.4 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 13.6 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $31.6 million in fiscal year 2013 in Missouri alone. New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 300 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.
Store manager Steve Hoag began his Walmart career 16 years ago as an assistant manager.
“I can’t wait for shoppers to get to experience Joplin’s first Walmart Neighborhood Market,” said Hoag. “The new store brings Walmart’s everyday low prices in a convenient smaller format to allow shoppers to get in and out quickly.”
A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Joplin community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, May 3. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Hoag and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last.
