More Jobs and Grocery Options Coming to South Pasadena

Walmart Neighborhood Market brings smaller format, local fresh food favorites and employment opportunities to the community

  • New Walmart Neighborhood Market located at 6850 Gulfport Blvd. S.
  • Up to 95 jobs created by South Pasadena Walmart Neighborhood Market
  • Store open 24 hours a day, seven days a week

SOUTH PASADENA, Fla., April 2, 2014 – Walmart will open a new Walmart Neighborhood Market Wednesday, April 9 after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store, approximately one-third the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is located at 6850 Gulfport Blvd. S. and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.

“The City of South Pasadena welcomes a new corporate citizen to its community today," said U.S. Representative David Jolly (FL-13). "With the opening of the new Walmart store on Gulfport Boulevard comes the promise of new jobs and increased choice for our community. We will work day in and day out to help foster a business and employer friendly environment to continue to bring and retain job-creating opportunities in Pinellas County."

Smaller Store, More Convenience

The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full-grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh baked breads, deli and a bakery.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

"It’s great that Walmart is making the decision to invest in our community and expand their role in Pinellas County," stated Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg). "This development will create jobs and provide additional retail choices for our residents, and I'm excited to see this momentum continue in our community."

Community Giving

The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $7,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups, including Answered Prayers Cross, Boca Ciega High School, Boca Ciega JROTC, Children’s Dream Fund, Gulfport Lions Club, Tampa Bay Harvest, and Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center and Foundation.

In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Florida donated approximately 26.8 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 22.3 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $53.6 million in fiscal year 2013 in Florida alone. New Store, New Jobs

The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 300 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.

Store manager Alvona Ellington began her Walmart career in 1999 as a cashier at a Sam’s Club in Lexington, Ky.

“I’ve built a career with Walmart and I’m excited to be managing a team of associates who will have similar opportunities right here in South Pasadena,” said Ellington. “All of the associates have worked hard to prepare for the grand opening and now we look forward to meeting shoppers.”

A Big Family Welcome

Walmart is happy to be part of the South Pasadena community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, April 12. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Ellington and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
