SOUTH GATE, Calif., April 7, 2014 – A new Walmart will open in South Gate on Wednesday, April 9 after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. with city leaders and Walmart officials. The much-anticipated store will provide residents in Southeast Los Angeles County a convenient location for fresh, affordable groceries, value-priced general merchandise, and pharmacy services.
“I’d like to congratulate the many South Gate residents who rose up at public meetings and said that they wanted a Walmart store in their community,” said South Gate Council member Gil Hurtado. “Residents specifically told us that they wanted the increased jobs and product mix a Walmart store would bring to South Gate.”
The 150,000-square-foot store will anchor the new Azalea Shopping Center in South Gate and provide residents in the Southeast Los Angeles County with one-stop shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“The Walmart store, combined with the entire shopping center, will become the jewel of the Southeast Cities, attract shoppers and visitors from throughout the area, and become an important economic engine for our city,” said Hurtado, who will be joined by at the event by South Gate Vice Mayor Jorge Morales, and council members Maria Davila and Bill de Witt.
The South Gate Walmart, the first ground-up Walmart Supercenter to open in Los Angeles County since 2006, will employ approximately 250 full- and part-time associates. The store opening represents a homecoming for Store Manager Fernando Reyes, who grew up in the community and graduated from South Gate High School.
“I’ve come full circle professionally and today I’m very excited to open this store, and proud to be coming back home,” Reyes said.
One-Stop Shopping Convenience
The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites. Local fresh produce will be available along with other local products.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services, and pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions, and provide customers with health and wellness solutions.
As part of the grand-opening celebration, Walmart will award a total of $8,000 in grants to the following nonprofit organizations in South Gate and other Southeast Cities:
Gate Middle School ($2,000)
South Gate Police Explorers ($2,000)
Independence Elementary School ($1,000)
South Gate Junior Athletic Association ($1,000)
South Gate High School Band ($1,000)
Teen Challenge ($1,000)
In addition to these grand opening grants, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in California donated approximately 10.2 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 8.5 million meals.
In California, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $26.3 million in fiscal year 2013. And in Los Angeles County, the company contributed $2.8 million in cash and more than 1.3 million pounds of food to support local charitable and civic organizations throughout during FY13.
