SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 27, 2014 – Walmart will open a new Walmart Neighborhood Market Wednesday, April 2, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store, approximately one-third the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is located at 3255 Mission College Blvd. in the Mercado Center and is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. The new store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.

"We couldn't be more pleased to have Walmart Neighborhood Market join the Mercado Shopping Center," said Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Steve Van Dorn. "It is great to see Walmart fill an existing space to create new options for consumers and good jobs for area residents. Store management has done a great job hiring from within the community and we are happy to hear about the local organizations they are giving back to already."

Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full-grocery department, including organic and gluten free selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh baked breads, self-serve deli and a bakery.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

Community Giving
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $6,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include Santa Clara Police Department, Santa Clara Fire Department, the Santa Clara Rotary Club and Fairwood Elementary School.

In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in California donated approximately 10.2 million pounds of food in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 8.5 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $26.3 million in fiscal year 2013 in California alone. New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 300 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.

Store manager Karina Arvizu began her Walmart career in 1993 as an hourly sales associate.

I am looking forward to bringing a new shopping option to the northwest region of Santa Clara,” said Arvizu. “The convenient store format and Walmart prices will be a great addition to the community and we welcome everyone to join us for our grand opening celebration.”

A Big Family Welcome

Walmart is happy to be part of the Santa Clara community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, April 5. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Arvizu and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
