Walmart will open a new Walmart Neighborhood Market Friday, March 14,
after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store,
approximately one-fourth the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is
located at 1855 S. Garland Ave. in the Garland Shopping Center and is
open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The new store will provide
local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery
shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.

“The Garland Shopping Center is an iconic and historical focal point for our community. We are pleased that Walmart decided to build here and help spur growth in this part of our city again,” said Garland Mayor Douglas Athas. “We welcome this addition to our community and it is exciting to see this shopping center vibrant again. I am certain that this will be a win-win for both Walmart and for those that will shop there.”
Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full-grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh baked breads, self-serve deli and a bakery. The Garland store is also tailored to the community, offering local favorites, including
pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team
members can answer product and prescription questions and customers
can ask about health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $8,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include Good Samaritan of Garland, Hope Clinic of Garland, GB2K Arts and Theatre Mentor Program, Garland Summer Musical and Garland Elk’s Lodge #984.
New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs up to 95 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 300 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.
Store manager Peter Vanderburg began his Walmart career in 1995 as a meat sales associate in Moore, Okla.
“I am looking forward to showing the Garland community the new store and all it has to offer our shoppers,” Vanderburg said. “We would like to invite the community to join us for the grand-opening celebration and throughout the week to shop and enjoy the many vendors and giveaways taking place.”
A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Garland community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, March 14. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Vanderburg and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last.
