FRESNO, Calif., February 4, 2014
– Today Walmart announced plans to open a new Walmart Supercenter at the corner of Ashlan Ave. and Blackstone Ave. in Fresno. The new Supercenter is scheduled to open in summer 2014 and will employ approximately 250 associates, bringing additional economic vitality to the city.

We welcome this private investment along the City’s major north/south commercial corridor,” said Ashley Swearengin, Mayor of Fresno. “Projects like these, coupled with the City’s vision for improving Blackstone Avenue with public infrastructure will help give new life to this critical commercial corridor.”

At approximately 107,000 sq. ft., the store will occupy the space previously housed by Mervyn’s that has been vacant for more than five years.

On behalf of District Seven, I’m pleased to welcome Walmart to the Blackstone business corridor,” said Clint Olivier, Fresno City Councilman. “Walmart will bring new life to a key corner of the district, bringing convenient shopping options, new jobs and additional customer foot traffic to surrounding businesses. This announcement is just another example of the steps my office has taken to re-energize and improve a very crucial part of our city’s business core.”

New Store, New Jobs
The store will feature quality, value-priced general merchandise including apparel, electronics, toys and sporting goods. It will also offer a full line of groceries including organic selections, fresh dairy and meat departments and local favorites. The pharmacy will offer a full range of products and services, as well.

This store will offer our Fresno customers a new, more convenient shopping experience for their every day merchandise needs including fresh, healthy grocery options,” said Mickey Anderson, regional general manager and senior director for Walmart. “We’ve been doing business in Fresno for more than two decades and we look forward to growing our team of associates and creating more local partnerships with community organizations helping Fresno live better.”
