47,000 additional square feet
Walmart creates approximately 80 additional jobs
open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, beginning Wednesday, Jan.
The expansion adds approximately 47,000 square feet to the existing store and will allow for a larger selection of merchandise for customers. New departments include fresh produce, bakery, deli, rotisseries, prepared meals and vision center.
“The expansion of the Gardner Walmart will increase the city’s commercial tax base, has provided for the realignment and upgrading of a difficult and dangerous intersection, and will offer additional jobs for those within the Greater Gardner region,” said Mayor Mark Hawke. The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries. The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of $4,750 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include C.A.R.E, the Gardner Fire Department, Gardner Police Department, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Stetson School.
In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Massachusetts donated approximately 880,000 pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 730,000 meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $3.4 million in fiscal year 2013 in Massachusetts alone. More Store, More Jobs
The store employs approximately 250 full- and part-time associates, including approximately 80 positions created by the expansion. Store manager Jeremy Friedman began his Walmart career in 2003 as an hourly cashier.
"Our expanded Supercenter format will bring a wider selection of merchandise, including fresh foods and grocery under one roof at Walmart's everyday low prices,” said Friedman. “Our new store layout allows for fast and friendly service throughout the store. These improvements to the shopping experience come as we increase the number of full- and part-time jobs and provide career opportunities for our current associates."
A Big Family Welcome
