PUTNAM, Conn., Oct. 18, 2013 – An expanded Walmart will unveil the changes Wednesday, Oct. 30, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7 a.m. The expanded store at 625 School St. is conveniently located off Interstate 395, Exit 97. Beginning Nov. 2, the store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will provide Putnam residents with one-stop shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store also offers pharmacy services.
The expansion adds approximately 55,000 square feet to the existing store and will allow for a larger selection of merchandise for customers. New departments include produce, deli, bakery, meat/seafood, expanded dairy and grocery and a Vision Center.
"Putnam is delighted that Walmart made the decision to expand our local Walmart into a Supercenter," said Delpha Very, Director of Economic and Community Development. "From the beginning, Walmart and its staff have been a committed community partner. Whether it be donations to our non-profits in support of their mission to serve, partnering with our municipal projects and events, or helping to feed our under-served population, Walmart has been a steadfast resource and friend."
One-Stop Shopping Convenience
The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites. Some local products available include Polar beverages and Wright's Farm Restaurant pasta sauce and salad dressing.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
Community Giving
The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of $2,750 in grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include the Brooklyn Little League, Exchange Club of Northeast Connecticut and the Thompson Lions Club.
In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart's pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart's and the Walmart Foundation's $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Connecticut donated approximately 660,000 pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 550,000 meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $2.3 million in fiscal year 2013 in Connecticut alone. More Store, More Jobs
The store employs approximately 300 full- and part-time associates, including approximately 80 positions created by the expansion. Store manager Michael Douglas began his Walmart career in 1993 as an hourly associate.
"This newly expanded store brings the Walmart Supercenter brand of shopping to Northeast Connecticut, providing new fresh areas and a full grocery area coupled with great everyday prices," said Douglas.
A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Putnam community and is ready to celebrate with residents Saturday, Nov. 2. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Douglas and enjoy fun family activities such as character appearances and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
