La Puente Welcomes Fresh Grocery Option, New Jobs

Walmart Neighborhood Market Opens October 2, bringing 65 jobs, full service grocery and pharmacy

LA PUENTE, Calif., Sept. 30, 2013 – La Puente shoppers will have a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs when the new Walmart Neighborhood Market opens on Wednesday, Oct. 2, following a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.

"Attracting new businesses and creating more local jobs is a priority for our Council," said Charlie Klinakis, Mayor, City of La Puente. "I encourage more retailers to follow Walmart's example and come to our great city."

The 32,000 square-foot Neighborhood Market is located at 1425 N. Hacienda Blvd. and is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

"Local small businesses face a number of challenges in the current economy," Steven Ly, executive director, San Gabriel Valley, Regional Chamber of Commerce. "The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will not only give the community more shopping options, but having a major brand such as Walmart the store will also help increase customers for surrounding small businesses, helping them succeed as well."

In Los Angeles County, there are eight other Neighborhood Markets, including Panorama City, downtown Los Angeles, Altadena, Downey, Torrance, Hawthorne, Bell Gardens, and Hawaiian Gardens.

"These days, many La Puente families find it tough to make ends meet," said David Argudo, councilman, La Puente City Council. "This new Neighborhood Market will give residents good jobs and a convenient and affordable option for groceries and healthy food choices for their families."

Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh-baked breads, self-serve deli and a bakery. The La Puente store is also tailored to the community, offering local favorites, including locally grown produce.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

Community Giving
Walmart and the Walmart Foundation is providing grants to local organizations that service the community and impact causes Walmart associates and customers care about. As part of the grand opening celebration, Walmart will be presenting $13,000 in grants to the following local organizations, including:

  • Del Haven Community Center – funds will support the Voyager Afterschool Program assisting children with emotional or developmental issues.
  • East Valley Boys & Girls Club – proceeds will support educational, learning skills and physical fitness programs for local children and teens.
  • Nine other local organizations, including City of Industry Sheriff's Station Youth Activities League, Los Angeles County Fire Explorers, California Elementary (West Covina USD), California Elementary (Hacienda La Puente USD), Sparks Elementary, Sparks Middle School, Sunset Elementary & Orthopedic Handicapped School, Workman High School Marching Band, La Puente Youth Science Center, and La Puente Women's Club.
  • Meals on Wheels of La Puente Valley will receive a $5,000 grant toward their nutrition and meal program that serves over 100 elderly and home bound local residents five days a week.

In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart's pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart's and the Walmart Foundation's $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in California donated approximately 10.2 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 8.5 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $26.3 million in fiscal year 2013 in California alone. New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs up to 65 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are more than 250 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.

Store manager Nicole Kelleher began her Walmart career in 2002 as an hourly associate in health and beauty aids. "I'm proud to bring this new store format to the La Puente community," said Kelleher. "This store can impact many families by providing a way for our hard-working customers to save money so they can live better. I'd like to personally invite the community to come celebrate our grand opening with us."

A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the La Puente community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, Oct. 5. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Kelleher and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, barbeque Oscar Meyer steaks and hot dogs, music, mural signing, cupcake decorating and reusable bag distribution. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
