SWANSEA, Mass., Sept. 4, 2013 – A newly relocated Walmart will open Wednesday, Sept. 11, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store at 262 Swansea Mall Drive is conveniently located at the Swansea Mall, near the location of the previous store, and is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. It will provide Swansea residents with one-stop shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store also offers pharmacy services.
"The Swansea community welcomes the area's newest Walmart Supercenter. We appreciate the addition of jobs and the newly expanded grocery options and services the store brings to the area," said Jay Pateakos, vice president of business development of the Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "Walmart has been an excellent community partner since 2001, and we know they will continue to be for many years to come."
One-Stop Shopping Convenience
The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites. Some local products available include Portuguese sweet bread from Tony's Bakery and Portuguese chourico from Michael's Provision Co.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of more than $4,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups. The Swansea Public Library will receive $1,000 for youth programs and equipment. The Swansea Fire Department will receive $1,000 to support the annual fire prevention event to be held on Oct. 5 at the Swansea Mall. The award-winning Joseph Case High School Marching Band of Swansea will receive $1,000 to benefit its programs. Walmart will also provide a new scoreboard at Swansea Veteran's Memorial Park to benefit the Swansea Little League.
New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs approximately 200 full- and part-time associates, including approximately 85 positions created by the relocation. Store manager Erich Heilborn began his Walmart career in 1995 as an hourly associate and stocker in Coventry, R.I. He has been the store manager at Swansea since 2009. Heilborn is a military veteran, along with four other associates.
"We are proud of our new store and welcome the community to celebrate the grand opening with us," said Heilborn. "We appreciate our customers' patience through our construction. The wait is over!"
A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Swansea community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, Sept. 14. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Heilborn and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
