More Jobs and Grocery Options Coming to Torrance

Walmart Neighborhood Market brings fresh food and employment opportunities to community

TORRANCE, Calif., July 15, 2013 – Torrance shoppers will have a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs when the new Walmart Neighborhood Market opens this month in the Torrance Promenade.

The store, located at 19340 Hawthorne Blvd., will open Wednesday, July 17, following a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store is approximately 30,000 square feet and will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, offering a variety of groceries and pharmacy services.

"The addition of a Walmart Neighborhood Market is a welcomed opportunity for our community," said Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto. "Adding another new business along the Hawthorne corridor is an excellent sign of an improving economy, and the new Market creates new job opportunities and shopping choices for our residents."

The Torrance Neighborhood Market is one of 24 Walmart stores opening across the country on July 17th.

"Walmart Neighborhood Market will provide employment opportunities, training and leadership for residents of our community," said Donna Duperron, president/CEO, Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce. "We welcome them to Torrance and look forward to their partnership".

New Store, New Jobs
The new store will employ up to 65 full- and part-time associates. Store manager Steve Matthews started his career with Walmart in 1995 as a part-time associate and is now managing his own store for the first time.

"I want to ensure that my associates will have the same opportunities for promotion and career advancement that I've had over the years," said Matthews. "We look forward to serving Torrance customers looking for fresh, healthy and affordable grocery options at our new convenient neighborhood location."

Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The Torrance store will feature fresh meat and produce, as well as locally supplied fresh sushi.

The Torrance store will also offer convenience services, including Site-to-Store and a MoneyCenter. With Site-to-Store, customers can shop online at Walmart.com and have eligible items shipped for free to the new Torrance Neighborhood Market. The MoneyCenter will allow customers to easily manage their money with secure financial services at low prices. Services include bill pay, money orders, check cashing and more.

Full-service Pharmacy
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services, including prescription refills and transfers. Pharmacist Apra Desai and other pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

Community Giving
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of up to $8,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups, including Towers Elementary, Victor Elementary, St. James Catholic School, West Torrance Homeowners Association and Community's Child.

"I'm looking forward to having Walmart Neighborhood Market in our community, they're a true believer in community giving in Torrance," Sherry Kramer, Board Chair, Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce.

A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Torrance community and is ready to continue the celebration with residents on Saturday, July 20th. On Saturday, Univision Radio and Walmart have partnered to bring customers "A Big Family Welcome," a chance to meet associates at the Torrance Neighborhood Market, and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, balloon animals, music, dance contests, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the store.
