Walmart Neighborhood Markets bring smaller format, local fresh food favorites and employment opportunities to the community

  • New Walmart Neighborhood Markets located at 2801 S. Orange Ave. and at 1101 S. Goldwyn Ave.
  • Up to 190 jobs created by Orlando Walmart Neighborhood Markets

ORLANDO, Fla., June 17, 2013 – Walmart will open two new Walmart Neighborhood Markets on Wednesday, June 26, and Friday, June 28, after brief ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 7:30 a.m. The new stores are approximately one quarter the size of a Walmart Supercenter. The Southside store, located at 2801 S. Orange Ave. in The Market at Southside, will open Wednesday, June 26, and the Washington Shores store, located at 1101 S. Goldwyn Ave. will open Friday, June 28. The new stores will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.

"When community members join together to create change in their neighborhoods, exciting things happen," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. "The grand opening of the Washington Shores Walmart Neighborhood Market is a great example of how a collaborative visioning process can lead to substantial private investment in the community. This is a great achievement, and the residents, business owners and faith leaders of Washington Shores should be proud!"

Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The stores feature fresh produce, rotisserie chicken, a self-serve deli, beer and wine, health and beauty aids, household goods, pet supplies, digital-photo processing, hardware and Site-to-Store.

The pharmacies offer a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and offer health and wellness solutions.

Community Giving
Both grand-opening celebrations include presentations of $8,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups. Some grant recipients include Grace Medical Home, Boone High School, Delaney Early Learning Center, The Hope Church and The Central Florida Urban League.

New Store, New Jobs
The new stores employ a combined total of up to 190 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 250 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.

"I am pleased that the new Southside Walmart Neighborhood Market will be creating 95 new jobs in the Downtown South Main Street area," said Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan.

Southside store manager Michael Raybuck began his Walmart career in 2000 as an hourly associate in the electronics department at the Walmart store on South John Young Parkway in Orlando.

"We are pleased to bring our Walmart Neighborhood Market to the Market at Southside," said Raybuck. "We will offer convenience and great prices on a wide selection of fresh grocery items. We hope everyone will stop by during our grand-opening festivities to see the new store, sample products and take advantage of giveaways offered by our vendors."

Washington Shores store manager Ivette Miranda began her Walmart career in 1995 as an hourly part-time sales associate in cosmetics at a store in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

"Our Walmart Neighborhood Market will be an important addition to the Washington Shores community," said Miranda. "We are excited about bringing fresh food, great prices and good job opportunities to this area."

A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Orlando community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, June 29 at both stores. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Raybuck and Miranda and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebrations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at either location.
