DERBY, Kan., June 10, 2013 – Walmart will open the first Walmart Neighborhood Market in Derby on Wednesday, June 12, following a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store, approximately one quarter the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is located at 1106 S. Rock Road and is open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight. The store will provide local customers with a convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services. The Derby store is one of 17 Walmart stores opening in communities across the United States on June 12.
"We are very excited to welcome Walmart Neighborhood Market to Derby," said Mayor Dion Avello. "It's wonderful to see another new business opening its doors along our growing Rock Road corridor, and we are pleased that Derby will have another convenient option to serve shoppers from Derby and the neighboring communities."
Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh-baked breads, self-serve deli and a bakery.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and offer health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $4,500 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups including the Derby Police Department, Derby Recreation Commission and Kansas Food Bank.
New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs approximately 65 associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 250 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.
Store manager Steve Marten began his Walmart career in 1983 as an hourly associate in Garden Center of the Walmart in Chanute.
"I am excited to offer another opportunity for the Derby area to have a great shopping experience with this new store concept," said Marten.
A Big Family Welcome
Walmart is happy to be part of the Derby community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, June 15. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Marten and enjoy fun family activities such as mascot appearances, a bounce house and free food samples while supplies last.
