Walmart to Bring Jobs and Affordability to Garden Grove

New store will support about 200 jobs in the city and revitalize vacant building

Garden Grove, CA, April 28, 2013 – Walmart recently announced it is revitalizing an empty building to bring a new store to Garden Grove, creating a new option for residents who need a job or want more affordable shopping options close to where they live or work. Slated to open this fall, the new Supercenter, located at Gilbert Street and Chapman Avenue, will provide about 200 job opportunities in the community, as well as convenient, one-stop shopping for residents.

The 107,000 sq. ft. store will feature general merchandise areas, including a full-service pharmacy, apparel and accessories, sporting goods, electronics, home, fine jewelry, and health and beauty, as well as a full line of groceries with a bakery, a delicatessen, a frozen food section and meat, dairy and fresh produce sections.

Walmart began its investment in the City of Garden Grove when it opened a Neighborhood Market in Garden Grove last fall, providing fresh and affordable groceries to the area.

“Garden Grove is thrilled to welcome a new, full-service Walmart to our community. Not only does it bring shopping convenience and wider selection to the neighborhood, it brings needed jobs and important tax revenues for the city,” said Garden Grove Mayor Bruce Broadwater. “Despite the City's ongoing efforts, this site has stood vacant for over a decade and in need of a strong anchor to draw new tenants and customers, from even outside of Garden Grove. It's another indication, not only of an improving economy, but of successful partnerships between the City of Garden Grove, commercial investors and the local community.”

Walmart is proud to support the communities in which it is located, partnering with many local charitable organizations in Garden Grove since its opening last year, including Korean Community Services, Acacia Adult Day Services, and the Boys and Girls Club of Garden Grove.

“Walmart has demonstrated it is serious about investing in Garden Grove and Orange County,” said Jeremy Harris, President and CEO of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce. “The Neighborhood Market that opened up last fall has been a tremendous asset to our community, increasing economic activity, creating jobs and generating tax revenue, and we expect this new store will be another win for our community.”

In addition to providing fresh and healthy food and general merchandise at everyday low prices, Walmart brings significant tax revenue to the cities where they operate and high quality jobs with competitive benefits. The store will open a temporary hiring center near the store to hire about 200 associates, a mix of both full- and part-time positions. Associates will be needed to work in all areas of the store, including supervisory positions.

The average wage for full-time hourly Associates in California is $12.93, and Walmart employs more than 75,000 people in California.

Walmart’s benefit program is available to eligible full- and part-time associates and provides a variety of affordable health and well-being benefits including health care coverage with no lifetime maximum. Walmart also offers eligible associates matching 401(k) contributions of up to six percent of pay, discounts on general merchandise, an Associate Stock Purchase Program and company-paid life insurance. Additionally, eligible associates receive a quarterly incentive based on store performance.

In addition to the about 200 job opportunities the Supercenter will bring, approximately 100 temporary contract construction jobs will also be created.
