DECATUR, Ala., April 10, 2013 – Walmart will open the first Walmart Neighborhood Market in Decatur on Friday, April 19, with a brief grand-opening ceremony at 8 a.m. The new store, approximately one-quarter the size of a Walmart Supercenter, is located at 1203 Sixth Ave. SE. and is open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight. The new store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services.
“We are excited to have the Walmart Neighborhood Market join our business community. This is a unique product and a great addition to Sixth Avenue and the city of Decatur,” said John Seymour, president and CEO, Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce.
Smaller Store, More Convenience
The Walmart Neighborhood Market format offers quick and convenient shopping, with a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections. The store features prepared food options, fresh-baked breads, self-serve deli and a bakery. The Decatur store is also tailored to the community, offering local favorites, including:
- Meow Mix cat food
- Dale's Steak Sauce
- Big Bog Gibson's BBQ Sauce
- Mrs. Stratton's Salads
- Zeigler meat products
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and offer health and wellness solutions.
Community Giving
The grand-opening celebration includes presentations of $2,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups including the Decatur Baptist Children's Home and Hospice of the Valley.
New Store, New Jobs
The new store employs approximately 95 full- and part-time associates. The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and today there are approximately 230 Walmart Neighborhood Market stores nationwide.
Store manager Dwain White began his Walmart career in 1995 as an hourly associate in deli sales.
"I'm looking forward to bringing this new store format to the Decatur community to help people save money so they can live better," said White. "I'd like to personally invite the community to come celebrate our grand-opening weekend with us."
