Two Walmart Neighborhood Markets Bring Convenience, Savings & Jobs to Fresno County

Stores will offer affordable groceries, create approximately 130 to 140 jobs and help stimulate nearby businesses

Fresno, Calif., Dec. 17, 2012 – Walmart today announced it is bringing two new Walmart Neighborhood Markets to Fresno County customers. The stores, located in Fresno and Clovis, will bring fresh and affordable groceries into surrounding areas and provide about 65 to 75 permanent jobs at each store. The stores will be located at the southwest corner of Herndon Avenue and Willow Avenue in Fresno and at 1830 Shaw Avenue in the Mountain View Centre in Clovis.  Both stores are scheduled to open in 2013.

"We are excited about this new Walmart Neighborhood Market coming to Fresno" said Fresno Council Member Lee Brand.  "This store gives area residents another affordable shopping alternative and brings needed jobs into the community.”

“Clovis is proud to be one of the first cities in the Central Valley to open a new Walmart Neighborhood Market,” said Clovis City Council Member Nathan Magsig.  “This new store format gives residents an opportunity to shop locally at affordable prices.”

The first Walmart Neighborhood Market in the U.S. opened in 1998, and there are now over 200 across the country offering services and items such as: fresh produce; meat and dairy products; frozen foods; dry goods and staples; health and beauty aids; stationery and paper goods; pharmacy; deli and bakery items; and pet supplies.

Both Walmart Neighborhood Markets in Fresno County will include energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy, water consumption and minimize waste. Features include LED lighting used in exterior signage and refrigeration cases, an energy management system for adjusting energy usage and one of the industry’s most efficient heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) units available.

Walmart supports local charitable causes that are important to the communities it serves. In 2011, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation contributed $28.9 million in cash and in-kind donations to community organizations in California. Local organizations in Fresno County include the Community Food Bank, Fresno First Steps Home and the Foundation for Clovis Schools.
