Community Organizations Benefit from Grand-Opening Grants
A special preview night will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, with community and business leaders joining Walmart associates and their families for grant and volunteer time presentations. The colors and pledge of allegiance will be presented by the Powhatan Boy Scout Troops. Ware, a resident of Powhatan, is the special guest for the evening and will speak on the economic impact the new store will have for Powhatan. He will be followed by Tina Bustos, executive director of the Powhatan Chamber of Commerce.
Nonprofit organizations will also benefit from the retailer’s ongoing charitable contributions and support for community projects. Check presentations and donated time presentations will be given to several nonprofit organizations that serve Powhatan County residents. The Powhatan store manager will announce $8,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local organizations, including Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad, Powhatan County Sheriff Department, Backpacks of Love, Powhatan Boy Scouts, Powhatan Girl Scouts, Powhatan 4-H Groups, Powhatan Youth Athletic Association and Powhatan Fire Department.
Several area organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Free Clinic of Powhatan, Mesa Vista Therapeutics, Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center and Powhatan Christmas Mother will receive the donation of time for the Volunteerism Always Pays “VAP” program. Through VAP, associates who donate their time to a nonprofit organization may request charitable contributions on behalf of those organizations where they volunteer. “This is a win-win situation for the organization and the associates. Giving back is what it’s all about,” Francisco said.
“On behalf of the Free Clinic of Powhatan we warmly welcome Walmart to the Powhatan community. We thank them for their financial support that was instrumental in helping the clinic provide medical care to our many patients,” said Connie Moslow, Free Clinic of Powhatan executive director. “The arrival of Walmart will impact the Clinic patients, allowing them to purchase prescriptions, food and other needed supplies without leaving the county, saving them time and gas. The Free Clinic of Powhatan looks forward to continuing our relationship with Walmart, which will benefit our patients and the community of Powhatan.”
Healthier Food and “Great For You”
Walmart made a major commitment to make food healthier and healthier food more affordable, ensuring families won’t have to choose between a product that is good for them and one they can afford. Steps in the healthier food initiative include:
- Reformulate thousands of packaged food items by 2015 by reducing sodium and added sugars and removing all remaining industrially produced trans fats.
- Make healthier choices more affordable by providing savings on fresh produce and reducing the price premium on “better-for-you” items.
- Provide solutions to address food deserts by bringing stores in underserved communities.
- Increase charitable support for nutrition programs that help educate consumers about healthier food solutions and choices.
The “Great For You” icon appears on select Great Value and Marketside products as well as fresh and packaged fruits and vegetables. The icon was developed to help customers easily identify nutritious food options so they can make healthier eating choices for themselves and their families.
