La Mesa Welcomes Walmart Neighborhood Market

Store brings 65 new jobs, new store format to community

LA MESA. Calif., Oct. 10, 2012 – The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will open Wednesday, Oct. 17, providing La Mesa residents a convenient location to pick up all their grocery needs, including fresh produce. Located at 8820 Grossmont Blvd., the store occupies a former Circuit City building.

“The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will be another valued member of our business community, and many of our residents are looking forward to its grand opening and the employment opportunities it brings to La Mesa,” said La Mesa Mayor Art Madrid. “Walmart has been a good corporate citizen to many of our civic and nonprofit organizations, and I'm confident that this new store will continue to be a good community partner.”

New Store Features
The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998 in Bentonville, Ark. The store format is designed to provide quick and convenient shopping for groceries, pharmacy items and general merchandise.

The 39,000-square-foot La Mesa store features a self-serve deli with pre-packaged foods, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as meats, cheeses and prepared foods. In addition to fresh produce, the store will carry a full line of groceries, including frozen foods, meat and dairy products, gluten-free and organic items. Customers can also find cakes and pastries in the bakery.

Shoppers will also appreciate the convenience of the store’s pharmacy, along with a full selection of health-related products and a health and beauty area. Additional areas include stationery, paper goods, pet products, hardware items and a Celebration Station, where customers can buy gift wrap and gift bags, greeting cards and party supplies. In addition to an expanded selection of general merchandise, the La Mesa Walmart Neighborhood Market will offer baby items, small electronics, movies and items for the home. The La Mesa Walmart Neighborhood Market will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

The store will offer Site-to-Store, a free service that allows customers to ship online orders from www.walmart.com free to any Walmart store for pickup.

All Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets participate in the Pay with Cash program. This allows customers to order online at www.walmart.com and pay for the items with cash at all stores in the U.S. Walmart is the first major retailer to offer online purchases without the need for banking services or a credit, debit or prepaid card.

Community Groups Benefit from Grand-Opening Grants
As part of the grand-opening celebration, $8,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will be presented to the La Mesa Adult Enrichment Center, Boys to Men Mentoring Network, Catholic Charities and College Preparatory Middle School. In addition, a $15,000 grant will be presented to SAY San Diego. Funds will be available throughout the year for local organizations that serve the community. Opening Creates Approximately 65 Jobs
Approximately 65 part- and full-time jobs were created by the store’s opening. Raley began his Walmart career in 1994 as a temporary associate at a store in Santee. Raley is a graduate of Granite Hills High school in El Cajon and attended San Diego State University. Pharmacy manager Fabiola Silveira was most recently pharmacy manager at the Santee Walmart.

“We are proud to be opening during the year that Walmart celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first store opening,” said Raley. “We look forward to serving the people of our community, helping save them money so they can live better.”

Healthier Food and “Great For You”
Walmart made a major commitment to make food healthier and healthier food more affordable, ensuring families won’t have to choose between a product that is good for them and one they can afford. Steps in the healthier food initiative include:

  • Reformulate thousands of packaged food items by 2015 by reducing sodium and added sugars and removing all remaining industrially produced trans fats.
  • Make healthier choices more affordable by providing savings on fresh produce and reducing the price premium on “better-for-you” items.
  • Provide solutions to address food deserts by bringing stores in underserved communities.
  • Increase charitable support for nutrition programs that help educate consumers about healthier food solutions and choices.

The “Great For You” icon appears on select Great Value and Marketside products as well as fresh and packaged fruits and vegetables. The icon was developed to help customers easily identify nutritious food options so they can make healthier eating choices for themselves and their families.
