Walmart to Open Neighborhood Market in Colorado Springs

New store offers customers big savings with grocery format

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Aug. 29, 2012 – Walmart will open its first Neighborhood Market in Colorado Springs on Aug. 29. The 52,000-square-foot store, located at 665 N. Murray Blvd., will provide residents with a convenient location to pick up all their grocery needs, including fresh produce. Doors to the new store will open at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 29, following a 7:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“This new Neighborhood Market will bring so much to the community in terms of new jobs, increased shopping opportunities for the people who live in this part of Colorado Springs and support for local charities,” said store manager Tammy Cooper.

Fresh Foods and Familiar Brands
Designed as a convenient family shopping center, the Walmart Neighborhood Market will provide the local community another destination for fresh, affordable groceries. The store will carry a full line of groceries, including fresh produce, frozen foods, meat and dairy products and organic items. For those on the go, the deli offers hot rotisserie chicken, sandwiches and fresh salads. The deli also offers a variety of baked foods.

“With our smaller format, our store is perfect for those on the go. Whether they’re stocking up or need to pick up just a few items, our customers will be able to find what they need quickly and easily,” said Cooper. “Our customers will be able to find familiar brands and local products at great values right in their own neighborhood.”

Shoppers will also appreciate the convenience of the store’s pharmacy, along with a full selection of health-related products and a health and beauty area. Additional areas include stationery, paper goods, pet products and hardware items. Customers can also print their own digital photos at the store. The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Store Provides 80 Local Jobs
The Neighborhood Market plans to employ approximately 80 associates. “Walmart provides job opportunities and career choices for everyone from seniors looking for supplemental income to young people wanting to gain work experience,” Cooper said. Like most Walmart store managers, Cooper began her career with Walmart as an hourly associate. She joined the company in 2001 as a cashier in Fountain, Colo.

Community Organizations Benefit from Grand-Opening Grants
As part of Walmart’s commitment to the communities in which it operates, $12,400 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will be presented during the grand-opening celebration. Recipients include the Care and Share Food Banks, Colorado Springs Police Department CAPS Volunteer Program, Leadership Pikes Peak, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado, Silver Key Senior Services, Home Front Cares and the Women’s Resource Agency.

“These local organizations and others like them provide much-needed services to area residents, and like all Walmart stores, our store will continue to work with them to provide support and community grants throughout the year,” said Cooper.

Ribbon-Cutting Celebration 7:30 a.m., Aug. 29
Community and business leaders will join Walmart associates at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony. Pastor Paul Aragon from Resotration Church will offer an invocation and Ashley Ryan will perform the national anthem. Cooper and assistant managers Jeanette Kelly, Loren Gerhardt, Ben Haines and Connie Whisenhut will cut the ribbon. Members from the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce are scheduled to attend.
