Grants to Bean’s Café, Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis & Food Bank of Alaska, Inc. will increase food distribution and provide shelter to those in need
Anchorage, Alaska, August 23, 2012—The Walmart Foundation’s Alaska State Giving Council today announced grants totaling $110,000 to three Anchorage-area non-profits, including Beans Café, Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC) and Food Bank of Alaska, Inc.
“We’re proud to support non-profit organizations in the communities we serve,” said Scott Patton, Alaska Market Manager for Walmart. “The Alaska State Giving Program is a way to focus our Foundation’s contributions and make them count throughout the state.”
Bean’s Café received a $35,000 grant to expand its hot meals program. AWAIC received a $25,000 grant to support its shelter program for victims of domestic violence. Food Bank of Alaska, Inc. received a $50,000 grant specifically to support its backpack food donation program for Anchorage schoolchildren.
“A very big thank you to Walmart for the donation, as they are community-minded and do so much for women’s causes,” said Nicki Shinners, development director of AWAIC.
These grants were presented to recipients during a check presentation ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 23 at the Walmart store on Old Seward Highway in Anchorage. Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan joined Walmart officials for the ceremony.
"During these challenging times, it is crucial that members of our community step up and lend a hand in helping address the issues that we all face together, and Walmart has risen to the occasion," said Mayor Dan Sullivan. "These generous and vital grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will help our local organizations continue serving those most in need."
The contributions to these non-profits were made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s Alaska State Giving Program. Through this program, the Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The Walmart Foundation State Giving Program strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S.
Last year in Alaska, Walmart, Sam’s Club locations and the Walmart Foundation awarded more than $1.5 million to local organizations.
To be considered for support, perspective grantee organizations must submit applications through the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program’s online grant application. Applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria.
