Two New Walmarts Bring Savings and Convenience to the Charlotte Area

New stores provide a total of 750 jobs in Locust and Concord

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 7, 2009 – Two new Walmart stores open this month in the Charlotte area, bringing a combined total of 750 new jobs, savings for local shoppers and an increase in tax revenue to support the area’s economy. Nonprofit organizations will also benefit from the retailer’s ongoing charitable contributions and support for community projects. The stores are located at 1876 Main St. in Locust and 5825 Thunder Road in Concord. Both stores will be open to customers at 8 a.m., Wednesday, July 15, following 7:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

Store Openings Create Total of 750 New Jobs
The two stores will create 350 and 400 jobs in Locust and Concord, respectively. Walmart announced in June that the company will create 22,000 jobs nationwide in 2009, including store management positions, pharmacists, human resource managers, customer service associates, cashiers and sales associates among others.

Concord Store Manager Bill Bennett began his career with Walmart in 1993 as a stockman at a store in Tunkhannock, Pa.

Stores Designed to Improve Customer Experience
In recent months, Walmart has taken major steps to refresh its stores, merchandising and customer experience. The improvements have all come together in the company’s newest stores, such as the Locust and Concord Walmarts, with fast service, a friendly shopping experience and clean stores.

The new stores feature wide aisles, enhanced service and a layout designed to make the shopping experience more convenient for customers. Walmart aligned the departments that customers shop most frequently. Each pharmacy, for example, is adjacent to food making it easier for customers to pick up their prescriptions while shopping for their groceries.

“The layout of the store is easy to navigate, which will save our customers time as they shop for everyday necessities,” said Locust Store Manager Steve Pugh. “By grouping the products that our customers most often purchase including health and beauty and pet supplies, we are making one-stop shopping even easier.”

A bright interior color palette creates an inviting shopping experience and helps define the stores’ merchandise areas. Lower shelving creates an improved sightline and directional signage on every aisle helps customers find what they are looking for quickly. Walmart also combined the customer service desk, site to store pick-up location and photo lab in one area near the entrance. Customers now have easy access to these services, as well as associates on hand to help meet their needs.

Community Organizations Benefit from Grand-Opening Grants
As part of Walmart’s commitment to the communities in which it operates, a total of $29,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation will be presented during the stores’ grand-opening celebrations. Each store will present area organizations with grants to support programs that serve the community. The Locust store will present The Stanly Community College Crutchfield Education Center with $5,000; the West Stanly Christian Ministry Food bank will receive $3,000 and both the Locust Elementary School and West Stanly Fire Department will receive $2,500.

The Concord store will present Habitat for Humanity with $5,000. The Boys and Girls Club of Cabarrus County will receive $3,000, Carrabus Meals on Wheels and Carrabus Cooperative Christian Ministry will each receive $2,500, and American Red Cross, and the City of Concord’s police and fire departments will each receive $1,000.

Store Design Incorporates Environmentally Friendly Features
The Locust and Concord Walmarts, like all new Walmartludes energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste. The store’s skylights harvest daylight and reduce the amount of energy required to light the store by up to 75 percent daily. LED lighting in the store operates 70 percent more efficiently than traditional fluorescent lighting.

The cement used in the concrete flooring is made with recycled materials, and the floor’s finish reduces the need for chemical cleaners. Low-flow toilets and faucets reduce the water used in the bathrooms. The new store also operates a recycling program and will promote sustainable product purchases.

Ribbon-Cutting Celebrations at 7:30 a.m., July 15
Community and business leaders will join Walmart associates at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at each store. The Locust store will feature store associate Anna Leonard performing the national anthem and Locust Mayor Harold Greene, a new Walmart associate, will also be assisting with the festivities. Pugh and other associates will cut the ribbon to the new store.

At the Concord store’s celebration, store associate Africa Burney will perform the national anthem, and representatives from the Carrabus County Veterans’ Honor Guard will present the colors. Burnett and other local officials will cut the ribbon to the new store.
