Company commits $125,000 to the Mexican American Bar Foundation
BENTONVILLE, Ark., June 15, 2009 –As part of Walmart’s overall commitment to diversity and educational opportunities, the company is renewing a five-year commitment to the Los Angeles-based Mexican American Bar Foundation (MABF) in the amount of $125,000.
J.P. Suarez, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Walmart Stores International, made the announcement during the Foundation’s annual gala Saturday, June 13. The MABF is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation dedicated to providing financial assistance to Hispanic law students in the Los Angeles County area.
As part of the gala, the Foundation recognized several attendees with awards for their service to the legal profession. Suarez was honored with this year’s Professional Achievement Award.
“While I am honored to be recognized by our friends at the Mexican American Bar Foundation, I am most happy about the fact that we are renewing our commitment to help bring talented young Latinos into the legal profession,” said Suarez. “This commitment is one way to help ensure we are doing our part to make a career in law open to as many students as possible, regardless of their financial situation.”
Walmart is currently in its fourth year of a previous five-year commitment to the Mexican American Bar Foundation.
“The Foundation is proud of its longstanding relationship with Walmart and is deeply grateful for Walmart’s continued support of the Foundation’s mission,” said Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha, president of the Mexican American Bar Foundation and a litigation partner at White & Case LLP in Los Angeles. “J.P. Suarez is richly deserving of this honor. He is an accomplished lawyer having served for many years in the public and private sectors.”
