BENTONVILLE, Ark., Nov. 18, 2008 – As Thanksgiving draws closer, Walmart announced today it will take aggressive pricing action by rolling back food prices to put incredible savings on the table. As part of the retailer’s Operation Main Street program, Walmart is launching new savings on food as it works to cut the cost of Christmas week by week, saving Americans more than $200 million over and above its everyday low prices this holiday.
Last week, the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) shared news that the cost of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner has increased. To combat this, Walmart intends to help families serve up the kind of Thanksgiving dinner they want, without the worry.
Shoppers who have signed up for Walmart’s new “Savings Alerts” by cell phone at #WMT or www.walmart.com/mobileinfo will be receiving free text messages about food savings and more across the store this week. In addition, Walmart's Ad Match policy assures customers that their Walmart will match any local competitor's advertised price on the exact same item, alleviating the need for shoppers to drive all over town to get the very best value.
“We want all customers shopping our food aisles this season to know the trust they have in us to help them save money is well placed,” said Jack Sinclair, executive vice president, Grocery, at Walmart Stores US. “Last year we saved families an average of $700 on the same packaged grocery items sold at other supermarkets. We plan to keep on helping families stretch their dollars this holiday with prices that make a meaningful difference to their budget.”
By example, Walmart shoppers can plan a menu for eight, filling their shopping basket with all of these items for less than $35, including wine:
Walmart’s Turkey Dinner for Eight under $35:
- 2 boxes of Stovetop stuffing mix
- 4 lbs. of Sweet Potatoes
- 4 cans of Green Giant canned vegetables (select varieties)
- 2 cans of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce
- 12 lb. Fresh Hen or Tom Turkey
- 1 can Campbells Turkey Gravy
- Pack of Sara Lee Dinner Rolls
- 10" Pumpkin Pie
- 2 bottles of Oak Leaf Wine (or 24-pack Coke product)
Because food prices tend to be a large part of most shoppers’ budgets over the holidays, Walmart is giving its 1.4 million U.S. associates a 10 percent discount on all food items through Jan 1. Associates and customers also can go to Walmart’s web site www.makeyourdollarstretch.com to see tips for food savings and a holiday budget calculator for planning their budgets.
