UPDATED - Wal-Mart Tomato Statement - 6/9/08

Food safety is a top priority at Wal-Mart. We will continue to work with the FDA, CDC and our tomato suppliers to ensure that their public health concerns are addressed, and that affected products are identified and removed from our stores and clubs.

According to the FDA, the following tomatoes from any source are not affected by this advisory: cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached. The FDA has also announced that raw red Roma, raw red plum, and raw red round tomatoes from the sources listed at www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html#retailers have not been affected by this advisory. As such, these tomatoes may still be found on shelves at Wal-Mart Stores, Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Clubs.

Upon learning of the CDC’s concerns and the FDA’s alert, we directed stores and clubs in New Mexico, Texas and other select stores to remove products identified in the FDA alert from our cases. Following the FDA’s updated alert, we directed all stores and clubs nationwide to remove the identified products from our cases.

Impacted products include certain Romas, slicers, three pack and four pack tomatoes. Customers who purchased affected products will receive a full refund.

We urge customers who need more information to visit the CDC’s web site at http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/saintpaul/ or the FDA’s web site at http://www.foodsafety.gov/.
