“Operation: Deck the Walls” Kicks Off at Walter Reed Fisher Houses with appearances by Country Music Star Tracy Byrd, Fisher House and Wal-Mart executives
BENTONVILLE, Ark., November 13, 2007 –Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. continues its support for the military this holiday season and today announced that it is adopting the 36 U.S.-based Fisher Houses for “Operation: Deck the Walls,” a multi-city program providing $350,000 worth of monetary donations and holiday gifts as well as Christmas décor to military families currently residing in Fisher Houses across the country. Fisher Houses are built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers and provide free lodging for military family members to be close to a loved one during hospitalization. Both Wal-Mart and the Fisher House Foundation are proud members of America Supports You, a nationwide program launched by the Department of Defense to recognize citizens’ support for our military men and women and communicate that support to members of our Armed Forces at home and abroad.
The “Operation: Deck the Walls” program kicked off earlier today at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) when the Wal-Mart Foundation presented the Fisher House Foundation with a $100,000 check, and the Fisher House manager received three $5,000 Wal-Mart gift cards (one for each of the three Fisher Houses on the WRAMC campus) to purchase items for the houses and gifts for the families serviced. Additionally, Country Music Star Tracy Byrd was on hand to help decorate each house and meet the families. The Wal-Mart Foundation’s $100,000 contribution to the Fisher House Foundation will support the construction of a house that is slated to be built at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
Similar events are taking place at Fisher House locations throughout the country between Nov. 15 and Dec. 5. At each of these events, local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club associates will deliver seasonal décor and gifts and help military families decorate the houses. Each house manager will also receive a $5,000 Wal-Mart gift card for a shopping spree to benefit each of the facilities he or she manages.
“For years we have been a proud partner of America Supports You,” said Pat Curran, executive vice president of the People Division for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “Now, through our partnership with the Fisher House Foundation, we have yet another great opportunity to show our gratitude for the service and courage our servicemen and servicewomen embody everyday.”
“Wal-Mart is a true champion of our military,” said Ken Fisher, chairman, Fisher House Foundation. “We are grateful that they join us in recognizing the need to support our military during their time of need. The holiday decorations, gifts and shopping spree will be a big boost to morale for our house managers and guests this Christmas season.”
