Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. will present a $50,000 grant today toward the Texas Diabetes Institutes "ACT NOW" study. The announcement will take place this morning in a press conference at the store on Military Drive in San Antonio. The Texas Diabetes Institute (TDI), one of eight U.S. diabetes research centers participating in a groundbreaking diabetes prevention study, will be also be at the store offering free diabetes screenings and information for at-risk residents from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
The $50,000 grant will enable TDI to provide every ACT NOW participant with a $50 Wal-Mart gift card during every follow-up appointment -- a huge incentive for participants to stay involved in the study which requires more than three years participation.
The ACT NOW study tests a common diabetes drug on adults who do not have diabetes, but who have a very high risk of developing the disease.
