To understand our commitment to serving communities, it helps to know that Walmart was founded to bring people access to the most important things they need to live their lives better – and what could be more important than access to food?
Walmart believes no family should have to choose between food that’s healthy and food that’s affordable. In 2014, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation committed to help provide 4 billion meals to people in need and provide nutrition education to 4 million people by 2020. Recently, we announced that we have put funding in place to reach both of these commitments. These efforts are focused on encouraging people to prepare meals at home and to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Our vision for a sustainable food system is one that will require combining efforts to improve access and availability to healthier food with approaches to increase people’s confidence to select, prepare and serve healthier foods. That’s why we also support programs that provide nutrition education and cooking skill development to help families develop confidence in choosing healthier foods.
As the world’s largest retailer, we are relentless in our commitment to making healthier food more accessible to our customers. Ninety percent of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store, and we serve more than 165 million customers a week, which gives us a unique opportunity to make every day a little easier for busy families.
