The launch event of the “China Children’s Food Safety Protection Campaign” took place on June 5, 2016, as a major event during China’s 2016 National Food Safety Promotion Week. The launch, which was held at the China Children’s Center, celebrated the campaign’s goals of keeping children safe and the partners who made the initiative possible.
Walmart partnered with the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund (CCTF) to sponsor the campaign’s keystone “Children’s Food Safety Project,” which aimed to improve public knowledge of children’s food safety and to change behaviors through wide-spread educational efforts. CCTF invited senior government officials to attend the kick-off, including the vice minister of the China Food and Drug Administration, the vice president of the All-China Women’s Foundation, and the General Secretary of China Nutrition and Health Food Association. The officials expressed their appreciation of Walmart’s efforts on behalf of food safety advancement and the value added by Walmart’s long experience in food safety management both inside and outside of China.
The launch proved successful at spreading the food safety message in word and deed. Not only did more than 100 mainstream media carry reports on the event, Walmart and CCTF also distributed magnetized thermometers that monitor safe temperatures inside home refrigerators. Taking advantage of educational opportunities like the launch event is a foundational part of the Walmart Food Safety Collaborative Center’s philosophy, which seeks to drive change across the food industry, whether by influencing producers, distributors or consumers.
