For more than six decades, Walmart's promise to our customers has focused on Every Day Low Prices for the essential items families need most. Every decision, from how we work with suppliers to how we invest in our stores and communities, starts with a single question: How do we help people save money and live better?
In 1962, when Sam Walton opened the first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas, he started with the idea that retailers should work to lower its own costs and, in turn, offer lower prices for the families who shop there. That idea, Every Day Low Prices, still guides Walmart today. It’s our operational north star that inspires how we source and price nearly everything on our shelves.
Whenever you enter a Walmart, you can count on finding affordable prices and saving time that you might have spent shopping around to find a better deal. That certainty and consistency allows families to build a grocery budget they can plan around, rather than trying to track price changes from store, week to week, customers can count on Walmart’s continued focus on Everyday Low Prices.
Approximately 90% of U.S. population is within 10 miles of a Walmart, which means we can buy in volume, work directly with suppliers, and move products efficiently through our supply chain. Those efficiencies create savings that are passed back to customers through lower shelf prices. Our scale is essential to keeping prices on everyday goods low, even as costs shift elsewhere in the economy.
We continually review our prices across our stores and reinvest savings back into your baskets and budgets through Rollbacks — targeted price reductions on essential items families buy most. Today, Walmart U.S. expanded Rollbacks to more than 11,000 items by the end of Q2, up from 7,200 at the end of Q1, underscoring how we’re always working to bring prices down. Nearly 150 million customers rely on this Every Day Low Price promise every week when they shop for important daily essentials.
Today’s economic environment is uncertain. Walmart’s commitment to Every Day Low Prices is not. As the cost of everyday living changes, we’re always working to keep costs down, pass the savings on, and make sure the customers who depend on Walmart for their essentials can count on low prices every day – because helping people save money and live better isn't a slogan, it’s our mission.
