Judith McKenna is chief development officer for Walmart U.S., where she leads the strategy, development and growth of Walmart’s small-format business and Walmart Services, as well as the development of new formats and the integration of digital commerce into existing store formats.
Prior to her current role, Judith served as executive vice president of strategy and international development for Walmart International, a fast-growing segment of Walmart's overall operations with more than 6,100 stores and over 823,000 associates in 26 countries outside the United States. There, she led several areas including international strategy, real estate, mergers and acquisitions, integration, global format development and purchase leverage.
Previously, Judith was the chief operating officer for Asda Stores Ltd – the largest subsidiary in Walmart International, with more than 560 stores and an annual turnover of $34 billion. During this time Judith had direct responsibility for more than 180,000 associates and her role included leadership of retail, logistics, eCommerce and financial services. She was pivotal in the growth of Asda’s multichannel business and in making technology enabled retail a key part of Asda’s growth strategy.
Judith joined Asda in 1996, and prior to her appointment as chief operating officer, she served as Asda’s chief financial officer for more than 10 years, leading teams across finance, property and store development. During that time she was instrumental in Asda’s acquisition of the Netto business, creating a new supermarkets division and successfully integrating 190 stores into the business.
Judith is a passionate ambassador for diversity and a respected judge for a number of equality and diversity awards in the U.K. She is a trustee of Asda’s Tickled Pink charity which has raised $58 million for Breast Cancer charities over the last 17 years, and in 2012 she was awarded the prestigious “Retail Woman of the Year” award.
Judith graduated with an honours degree in law from Hull University in England before gaining her ICAEW accounting qualification at KPMG, one of the U.K.’s leading accounting firms. Prior to joining Asda, she worked at Allied Domecq in the leisure and brewing industry in a variety of finance roles. In 2013 she was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from Hull University.
